About UPS

UPS is the world's largest package distribution company and a leading global provider of specialised transportation and logistics services, with over 340,000 employees worldwide. Every day, they manage the flow of goods, funds, and information in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.

Choosing Sypol

Sypol were commissioned to undertake a corporate audit of risk at its European facilities. The audit initially focused on UK, Ireland, France, Spain and the Benelux region.

An integral part of the UPS team

To effectively manage the programme and to ensure that its results could be implemented by the European countries in which UPS has a presence, Sypol developed a simple plan that progressed through its requirements step by step.

The audits were linked to UPS' corporate health, safety and environmental (HS&E) plan to ensure consistency across the entire global organisation.

UPS considers the health and safety of its employees to be extremely important and is one of the reasons why its employees, through annual opinion surveys, consistently consider UPS an excellent place to work.

From strength to strength

Since the initial audits, Sypol has been involved in the roll-out of the corporate Global Emergency Response Plan (GERP) that is required to be implemented on all UPS facilities worldwide. This involved some preliminary audits at some European facilities with the generation of GERP documents in local languages. Training on GERP was also provided to local facility management and employees.

In 2003, Sypol conducted a gap analysis review at selected European facilities (UK, Netherlands, France, Belgium) against the corporate Comprehensive Health and Safety Process (CHSP). This initial review concluded with a report containing recommendations for the successful roll-out and implementation of this corporate process throughout Europe. In the intervening time, Sypol has supported the roll-out of CHSP through training UPS management and helping establish CHSP working committees at facilities throughout Europe.

Sypol continues to be an active partner with UPS supporting their operations within the UPS Europe Region. This involves the development and delivery of Region safety training to UPS corporate programmes, attendance at the Region Safety Steering Committee, development of risk management strategy for the carriage of dangerous goods, legislation and EU Directive updates. During the latter part of 2007, Sypol actively participated and supported the opening of a new package handling facility in the UK, currently the second largest outside of the US. Sypol are now about to embark on a programme of premise and fire risk assessments at all facilities within the UK.
