Sypol was founded in 1979. The twin stimulus in 1974 of the Health & Safety at Work etc. Act and the Control of Pollution Act had begun by the late 1970s to create a demand from industry for quality advice and information. Having established the "brand" with its distinctive logo of a green globe made of tessellating arrows, the company developed slowly through the 1980s. In the early 1990s Lawrence Waterman joined, taking over the leadership of Sypol and bringing his consultancy which had launched its Chemical Management System, CMS (then known as the COSHH Helpline). Karen Baxter worked with Lawrence and was responsible for the development of CMS, which has since become the UK's premier service for managing hazardous substances. Karen became Managing Director in January 2003, with Lawrence taking on the role of Chairman. Northern Ireland We expanded our operation to Northern Ireland in May 2001 with the acquisition of locally based Liberty Risk Services, a well-respected health, safety and environmental consultancy and training provider whose clients included multinational organisations such as Seagate and Nortel and a number of government departments. Since then, we have further consolidated our strong customer base by offering our high quality service via a team of locally based consultants and trainers. Our client base is now wide and varied including Diageo, Loughs Agency, Johnston Press, CCEA, Craigavon Borough Council, Belfast City Council. Old Bushmills Distillery, Premier Power Ltd, Ryobi Aluminium Casting, Phoenix Natural Gas, BP McKeefry Ltd, Pat O’Donnell & Co Ltd to name but a few. North of the Border Our Scotland office opened in 2002, headed by Bill Holmes, Director of Safety. The chosen location in the city of Dunfermline has proven to be ideal for getting around to support existing Scottish clients, knocking on the door of prospective clients and jetting back down south of the border to work in collaboration with our Aylesbury colleagues. |
