This half day course is designed for anyone involved in manual handling activities - lifting, carrying and moving items as part of their work.

- Understand what is classed as manual handling - as defined in the regulations
- Raise awareness of the common injuries from manual handling - the injury causes, types and location

- A review of the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (as amended 2004)
- The typical injuries and their causes
- An emphasis on the need for risk assessment
- Considering the task, load, working environment, individual capability and other factors
- The principles of lifting and movement
- The guidelines for lifting and lowering, pushing and pulling - good techniques
- Awareness of typical weights of items found in the workplace, handling bulky items, moving loads etc
- How manual handling affects you in your workplace by means of questionnaire and group discussion
- Making best use of lifting and handling aids
