Following consultation in 2006, the HSE has published responses to Managing workplace transport risk - a route map. With an average annual fatality rate of 66, workplace transport remains the second biggest cause of fatal injury in the workplace.
For this reason, the HSC intends to introduce a set of management standards relating to use of all forms of vehicular transport in a work environment. Called A Route Map for Workplace Transport, it will provide easy to follow guidance and information describing what we need to do to manage workplace transport risk.
Managing workplace transport risk - a route map will provide a framework to help us understand the role of existing workplace transport related regulations and guidance. The map will contain new guidance where gaps are identified as well as providing clear links to existing information. It is intended to help those in charge of workplaces and vehicles decide what sort of things to think about and put into place. They cover the following areas:
In 2006 the HSE invited comments on the consultative document. Feedback was published last month ...
-
83% of those who responded were in favour of the approach suggested
-
a small proportion thought the HSE was not going far enough
-
an equally small proportion believed the proposals to be excessive
-
the majority of comments received were considered to be directional, ie. what people would like to see included in the Route Map
-
the medical issues generated most concern, with 56% of respondents saying more information was needed
-
the sharing of information between organisations was also something that respondents said that they wanted help with
The HSE report concern that only 40% of respondents believed that workers understand their responsibilities. Finally the name "Route Map" was not well received, with only 59% believing that it explains the purpose of the information contained within.
There is limited information currently available regarding an implementation date for the new standards, so watch this space for updates.
